Chapter 23 Part 3

They both freeze, looking at each other.

Teddy leaves his unfilled glass on the counter and starts to bolt out of the room.

JOHN

“Are you um… feeling better, or whatever?”

Teddy turns to go again.

JOHN

“Would you just wait a second?”

JOHN

“You don’t have to look at me, whatever,
just listen okay?”

Teddy doesn’t move.

JOHN

“Look, I know when we were kids, I didn’t -- fuck, I was so-- I was shitty to you, okay?”

teddy

Really? I had forgotten all about it.”

Teddy’s facetious smile takes John by surprise, and he explodes.

JOHN

“HEY, I’M TRYING TO --”

He stops himself, inhales deeply, and continues a little bit more calmly…

JOHN

“...What I want to say is...”

teddy

“What am I supposed to do with that?

JOHN

“I… I dunno, just…”

teddy

“You want me to say ‘I forgive you’ so you can
feel better?”

JOHN

“That’s not what I--”

Teddy walks away, leaving John alone.

John knocks everything off the kitchen bar, and tips a stool over. He comes down hard on the bar, leaning over and hanging his head.

Having frantically rushed back to the chalet after Louis told him what he saw, Vincent bursts into the room he’s sharing with Teddy. Teddy is sitting on the floor. He doesn’t meet Vincent’s gaze, but he weakly smiles when he hears him come in.

vincent

“Teddy? Hey...”

teddy

“Don’t touch me. Please leave.”

vincent

“Talk to me about what’s going on-”

teddy

“Nothing, I’m fine."

vincent

“Hey, you know you can talk to me-”

teddy

“Please don’t touch me. Go. Go, I’ll be out in
a few minutes…”

vincent

“Can you get under the covers?”

teddy

“What?”

vincent

“Get in bed and I’ll go, okay?”

Vincent stands up, and holds out his hand. Teddy gets up by himself. Vincent lifts the covers, and Teddy climbs shakily onto the sheets. Vincent sort of loosely tucks him in. He draws the curtains and turns off the lights before quietly shutting the door.

Louis waits in the kitchen, looking at the mess John left. He looks surprised when Vincent joins him so soon. Vincent immediately stars to pick things up off the ground and generally clean the mess.

louis

“You don’t have to do that… Is Teddy okay?”

vincent

“He does this sometimes...”

louis

“Vincent, seriously, the maid will take care this.”

vincent

“I just need something to do right now.”

Louis awkwardly watches Vincent pick things up.

vincent

“...You said you saw John talking to him? Did you hear what they were saying?”

louis

“Oh, yeah, well… only the last part… to tell you the truth, it seems like John was trying to apologize…

Vincent lets out a sort of indignant huff. Louis looks at him, confused.

louis

“You don’t think John should apologize for
what he did?”

vincent

“It just doesn’t matter anymore.”

louis

“What? Teddy still seems pretty fucked up over it...”

vincent

“What difference does it make if John is sorry? Teddy shouldn’t have to forgive that sack of shit. What he needs is to like… forgive himself, I guess.”

louis

“...What? What does he have to forgive himself for?”

vincent

“Teddy thinks he did something wrong, like... as John’s friend. Y’know, when his mom died… Didn’t help him enough when he really needed it, or something.”

louis

“He was a 6th grader, not a grief counselor...What the fuck was he supposed to do?”

vincent

“With Teddy… as long as he’s smiling, he thinks he can deal with anything. He really can do a lot, too, his willpower is ridiculous…
...but when people - John, his parents, whoever - when they see that smile… it’s easy to forget he’s just a kid, with his own shit to deal with, same as anyone. So when Teddy needs help… people don’t always notice.”

It’s silent for a moment.

louis

“...well… at least he’s got you, right?”

vincent

“Yeah. He’s got me.”

Hours later, Teddy hasn’t left his room, and everyone else has come back hungry, so Vincent starts popping some of the pre-prepared dishes into the oven. John is nowhere to be seen, but nobody really notices.

andre

“Vincent, how did you end up being our chef all alone? Teddy still sick?”

vincent

“Ha, yeah -- Louis, looks like I really did become your chalet boy.”
'

Andre sees Kamri eyeing their flirting, and attempts to distract her.

andre

"HEY KAMRI, what did you think of the… uh… snow… today…?"

kamri

"What??? It was fine, I guess…?

While Vincent putters about in the kitchen - and the others snack and down beers - Louis slips into the hallway, going to check if Teddy is awake. When he knocks, he hears Teddy’s small voice.

teddy

“Vincent?”

louis

“Uh, sorry, it’s just me…”

teddy

“Oh, hi Louis. What do you need?”

louis

“Nothing, I just uh… wanted to see
how you were doing.”

Teddy asks him to turn the overhead light on.

When Louis sees him there, sitting in bed smiling sweetly like he didn’t have some sort of breakdown a few hours ago, he honestly feels a little creeped out. He tries to skip back to the kitchen, but Teddy asks him to stay for a minute.

teddy

“Louis, can I ask you something?”

louis

“Uhh... sure, I guess…”

Louis crosses his arms and waits for Teddy to spit out whatever question he has.

teddy

“Have you... always been gay?”

louis

“Excuse me?”

teddy

“I mean, have you always known...you were…”

louis

“...well, I used to get in trouble for kissing boys in kindergarten, so…”

teddy

“Oh, so you've never... thought about girls at all...?”

Louis scoffs.

louis

“No. Not like that.

He’s had this conversation before - with some of the other kids on this trip, even - and is expecting to roll his eyes and impatiently explain that some people (but not him) think about both, bisexuality is, in fact, A Thing, and so on and so forth…

But Teddy is just looking down, fidgeting with his book.

And Louis isn’t feeling particularly generous.

The awkward silence is broken when Vincent pokes his head in. He’s come to ask Teddy if he wanted to bring him some dinner. But Teddy is feeling much better now, and opts to come out to eat with the group.

John never shows up for the meal, but Teddy, Vincent - even Louis - are glad that he didn’t.

Much later that night, when the house is quiet, Louis and Vincent sneak downstairs to make-out in front of the fireplace. Vincent seems a little skittish, scared that somebody is gonna walk in on them.

louis

“Oh please, everyone is sound asleep, I checked. They skied their asses off today without the baby beginner to slow them down.”

He pats Vincent’s face condescendingly.

vincent

“Pfft, whatever…”

louis

“It seemed like Teddy was a lot better after dinner. Maybe I should hire you next time I get sick. You could wear a little nurse outfit and everything.”

vincent

“That’s weird.”

louis

“Hmm, yeah, on second thought, I’m not sure you can pull that look off…”

vincent

“Seems more like something that’d be in
your closet.”

louis

“You wanna see me in a costume, Vincent?
Should I borrow Kamri’s cheer uniform?

vincent

“Dude...”

louis

“Oh, right, you’re probably saving that particular fantasy for T--”

vincent

“Louis.”

Louis laughs, pushing Vincent’s hair out of his face and launching into a raunchy kiss. When they come up for air, Vincent pauses.

vincent

“Hey, uh -- thanks.”

louis

“Don’t thank me yet, we haven’t even started.”

vincent

“No, for today. Y’know…”

Louis rolls his eyes at Vincent changing the mood like that.

louis

“Shut up. You know what you can do if you really wanna thank me?”

After Vincent and Louis have their fun, they eventually make it back into their own beds. About 2 hours later, Louis is sleeping peacefully...

louis

"What the fuck?"

John tries to bolt, but Louis leaps out of bed and cuts him off.

louis

“Where the fuck do you think you’re going?”

john

“Why is your junk out? Why is your junk
always out?”

louis

“Why are you digging through my shit?
It’s like 4 am!!!

john

“Look, I just… “

John lets out an exasperated grunt.

john

“...Do you have any weed?“

louis

“What, you didn’t bring any?”

john

“No, I just… I used mine up...”

Louis narrows his eyes and almost tells John to go fuck himself, but…

louis

“Yeah, I’ve got some.”

Louis goes to his nightstand, and digs around in the drawer.

louis

“Hey, do you… want to talk about like, before...?”

john

“No.”

Louis wordlessly turns and hands John the weed.

louis

“You’re welcome?”

john

“...thanks.”

John stuffs the bag into his pocket and stomps out of the room.
