Chapter 23 Part 2

“Psst, Fawkes. If you don’t want to hook up you could just tell me -- you don’t have to ignore me.”

Vincent groggily rubs his eyes. A semi-drunk Louis looks indignant leaning over his bed.

vincent

“Ignore you? Huh???”

Louis grabs Vincent’s phone, flipping it open.

louis

“What the fuck? Why is your phone off?”

vincent

“What’s the point of having it on? I can’t pay roaming charges, so--”

Louis hits his forehead.

louis

“Of course you don’t have international service...christ, Vincent.”

Vincent shushes him, and points at sleeping Teddy. He's been in bed since Vincent came back from the hot tub - he didn't even eat dinner.

Louis rolls his eyes and grabs Vincent’s forearm, dragging him out of bed and into the hallway. He pulls Vincent into a forceful kiss.

louis

“You better make this up to me. I texted you a bunch. You’re so stupid.”

Louis kisses him again.

louis

“I would’ve bought you a fucking burner phone
or whatever. God.”

vincent

“I’m sorry, okay?”

louis

“Forget it. C’mon already.”

Louis leads him down the hall, both looking around cautiously.

Vincent is woken up by the bright sunlight reflecting off the snow outside the master bedroom’s gigantic windows. At first he tries to pull the blanket over his head, but then he realizes -- he fell asleep next to Louis last night.

Vincent presses his head back into the pillows, staring at the ceiling and silently asking himself what is wrong with me for this astounding second night in a row of waking up in a bed that isn’t his. Louis rolls over next to him.

louis

“Well good morning to you too.”

vincent

“Y-you’re awake?”

louis

“My pretty face doesn’t just happen by itself. I’m always up early. What’s your excuse?”

vincent

“Oh, um… Usually I like to run in the morning, so…”

louis

“There’s a treadmill in the basement. Weights, too - we wouldn’t want you to deflate while you’re away from the school gym.”

Despite Louis’ attempts at playfulness, Vincent still looks moody.

louis

“Ugh, what?

vincent

“I’m just thinking about like…”

Vincent pauses, sort of sighing.

vincent

“Last night I kind of…
ended up in Teddy’s bed, and…”

louis

“And…?”

Louis smiles pervertedly.

vincent

“No, god, nothing happened, it was just stupid. And awkward. Like it always is with him…”

Louis raises an eyebrow.

louis

“Why do you sound like, annoyed right now?”

Vincent sighs again.

vincent

“I don’t know…”

Louis rolls his eyes and invites Vincent to shower with him, but Vincent is starting to worry that someone’s going to notice he’s not in his bed...

Vincent walks down the hallway back to his guest room leisurely. Although he wants to get back, he should be safe - Teddy tends to sleep in.

Usually.

Teddy’s not in bed. The bathroom is empty. Vincent starts getting nervous - what if Teddy heard Louis in their room last night? What if Teddy found Vincent’s empty bed and just figured out EVERYTHING? What if he’s known all along!? He continues down the hallway to the kitchen with increasing speed.

He finally makes it to the kitchen, and finds Teddy sitting at the counter.

teddy

“Good morning, Vincent. Where’d you go this morning? I couldn’t find you.”

vincent

“I was just -- wait, what’s wrong with your voice?”

Teddy sounds all stuffed up. Happy to change the subject, Vincent gets up real close to Teddy, and takes a good look at him.

vincent

“Are you feeling okay?”

teddy

“I mean… I feel kind of chilly, but we are
on a mountain, so--”

Teddy is interrupted by Vincent's hands - which are suddenly on his face.

vincent

“Dude, you feel so warm… you’re cold, though?”

Teddy nods. To his surprise, Vincent suddenly rips off his pajama-shirt, wrapping it around Teddy’s shoulders, trying to keep him warm. Teddy’s face is flushed, but maybe it’s just the fever.

teddy

“V-Vincent, I’m okay--”

vincent

“You are seriously like a million degrees right now. I wonder if Louis has a thermometer…”

At that moment, Kamri walks in. Seeing Vincent shirtless, holding Teddy, she furrows her brows.

kamri

“Um, what the fuck? It’s too early for this.”

vincent

“Kamri, come over here, I think Teddy’s hot--”

kamri

“Ew, don’t involve me in your weird sex games.”

vincent

“Just put your hand on his forehead, okay?”

Kamri does, and her eyes go wide.

kamri

“Shit, it’s like summer on your face.”

teddy

“Listen, I’m okay, I’ll just go back to bed --”

Sliding off the stool, Teddy falters, falling onto Vincent’s chest. He pushes away in a hurry.

teddy

“Sorry, I--”

vincent

“Don’t worry, I gotcha.”

Vincent scoops Teddy up.

teddy

“Vincent, this is really unnecessary--”

With Teddy in his arms, Vincent dashes back to their bedroom. Setting Teddy down on his bed, he pulls up Teddy’s covers, picks Teddy back up, and tucks him in. Teddy looks at him with wide eyes.

teddy

“Vincent…”

vincent

“Did you eat?”

teddy

“A little, I'm alright…”

vincent

“I’m gonna go get you some water, and I’ll see if Louis has like, a thermometer and... some medicine, or something? Do you have a headache?”

Vincent hurries to the door, ready to dash back to the kitchen, waiting for Teddy to respond.

teddy

“No, I don’t think so, I’m just a little stuffy, really-”

vincent

“Okay, I’ll be right back.”

Everybody’s awake and making their way towards breakfast now - except for Louis. Vincent dashes around the kitchen frantically, looking in drawers and cupboards for Useful Items. Andre asks what’s up with him, and Kamri tells everyone that Teddy is sick.

Finally, Louis enters the kitchen, stretching leisurely. Vincent whips his head around to look at him. Louis gives him a morning-after smirk and a lustful good morning. Vincent grabs his shoulders seriously, asking bluntly if he has a thermometer.

louis

“What?”

andre

“Hey, man, are you gonna be like offended if the rest of us hit the mountain and whatever?”

vincent

“No, that’s probably better, the house will be quiet and Teddy can sleep...”

louis

“Is something wrong with Teddy?”

kamri

“He has a cold, but Vincent is going full Hot Nurse on us.”

andre

“Just a cold? Come on man, I boarded Mammoth with the flu once. Just leave him here, you need to practice if you’re gonna get up on the actual mountain on this trip.”

louis

“You guys should go have fun.
I’ll stay here with Vincent.”

andre

“Louis, not you too!”

vincent

“You don’t have to--”

louis

“You don’t know where anything is here. Plus, Teddy’s probably sleeping again already -- who’s gonna bug you all day?”

A little later on the slopes, the gang is mostly sticking together - except for John, who is off skiing alone. He’s been skiing longer than almost any of them, and tends to venture off on some pretty terrifying black-diamond trails.

Andre, SG, Kamri, Bianca and Charli have just finished their second run when Kamri starts to peel off towards the public lodge at the base of the mountain.

kamri

"I feel kind of weird, I’m gonna go sit for a second."

charli

"Ew, did you catch Teddy-itis?"

kamri

"No, I think I’m just hungry or something. I’ll catch you on the next run."

Kamri clips off her board and makes off towards the lodge. Before anyone can warble about following her to get some food or whatever, Andre pops up and steers them towards the lift.

andre

“Hey, uh, y’all wanna hop on a gondola together?”

andre

“Alright, look… I don’t want to like shock you girls, but me and S.G. have been talking, and… we think you should know that um… well…

bianca

“Is this about Vincent and Louis?”

andre

“You know?”

charli

“Of course we know. It’s not like they’ve been sneaky. They practically came to your
party together!”

andre

“You knew since then!? We just saw them at the mall together like a week ago...Does Kamri know?”

bianca

"I don’t know… we haven’t really talked about
it with her…"

charli

"What about John?"

andre

"Are you kidding me? Vincent would be dead."

bianca

"John would be dead.
Vincent’s too good at fighting."

andre

"Okay, okay, but you guys seriously haven’t told Kamri that her best friend is fucking her b…
her uh… her quarterback?"

charli

"I mean, she probably knows? Louis and Kamri talk about everything, right? Especially dick. They talk too much about dick."

bianca

"Right… yeah…"

andre

"And Teddy?"

bianca

"Well… Vincent and Teddy seem like they talk
a lot less…"

charli

"And I doubt they talk about dick at all."

andre

"If only they would."

charli

"Why are you so obsessed with them?"

andre

"It’s strategic, okay? And they seem like they would be happy together!"

charli

"What, Louis and Vincent can’t be happy together?"

bianca

"Would you guys focus!?"

bianca

“Kamri can be in-your-face, and John can be violent, but Teddy…

"I really have no idea how he’ll respond. That’s what scares me, and I think that’s why we need to try to keep this secret a secret. For now, anyway…”

Later in the day Louis reclines on the kitchen lounge sofa, playing on his iPad. Vincent comes in from the hallway.

louis

“How’s he doing?”

vincent

“Still sleeping.”

louis

“It’s getting towards lunch soon, do you think he’ll wake up and get hungry?”

vincent

“I dunno…”

louis

“Wanna go down to that convenience store and look for some cold medicine? We can get some chicken noodle soup, too -- er, whatever vege- tarians eat when they’re sick, I guess.”

vincent

“Is it okay to leave him alone?”

louis

“We can take a snowmobile and be there and back in like one second. He’ll never even know
we were gone.”

louis

"Okay, what about this one? Mushroom?"

vincent

"I told you, man, you gotta look in the ingredients, sometimes they stick random crap in it."

louis

"Ugh, this is so complicated."

Vincent puts his hand over Louis’, dragging the can to where he can read it.

vincent

"Look, see? Chicken flavor. He can’t eat it."

louis

"Oh my gosh, it’s chicken, not poison. It’s not like he’ll be able to tell."

vincent

"Alright, jackass."

Vincent puts the can back on the shelf.

louis

"Y’know, how much you care about him would be cute if it didn’t absolutely make me barf."

vincent

"I was actually wondering if should try to um… cut down on that..."

louis

"What, you wanna get over him?"

Louis says it like a joke, but Vincent is quiet for a while.

vincent

"…Yeah, kind of."

vincent

"I’m sick of feeling shitty for no real reason... I’m sick of making him feel shitty for no reason."

louis

"I get it, you wanna move on for the sake of
your friendship. That’s decent."

vincent

"Yeah… um, remember that day we were at the mall, and you were trying to get me to pick out a guy I’d… y’know…"

louis

"Fuck?"

Vincent huffs, and continues.

vincent

"Anyway, like...I was looking at every guy and thinking - could being with him possibly be better than being with Teddy?
But like… I’m not with Teddy, you know? That’s just… it’s just a fantasy. And comparing other guys to a fantasy isn’t... it’s not really fair."

louis

"So would you say you’ve made any fair comparisons recently, or…?"

vincent

"Huh?"

louis

"Did you have somebody else in mind?"

vincent

"Pfft, whatever."

When they finally decide on a soup, Louis reaches in his vest pocket and looks confused. He checks his other pocket. He checks his pants-pockets. He discovers he’s forgotten his wallet.

He tells Vincent to stay there, and that he’s just gonna ride back to the chalet real quick and grab it - he definitely wants to pay.

Teddy can’t sleep. He dozed off a few times out of pure exhaustion, but mostly he’s just tossing and turning in the fluffy guest bed. He pretends to be asleep when Vincent checks in on him, but he’s not really sure why. When he finally does manage to fall into a deep sleep, his dreams have him waking up all feverish…

- and not because he’s sick.

Around lunch time, when Louis and Vincent are out at the store, Teddy makes his wobbly way to the kitchen for a drink.

He’s just pulled some juice out of the fridge-

… when John comes in early from the mountain.
