Chapter 22

Teddy is the last to make it to the student council meeting today. He's been losing track of time all day.

Teddy

“Sorry I’m late -- this is our last Student Council meeting before winter break, so let’s make it a quick one, shall we? I think the only thing we really have to discuss today is--”

He stops short, noticing an empty chair.

Teddy

“...Penelope isn’t here yet?”

Bianca

“Um, Teddy…Penelope told me… well actually, she texted Kamri who told me that… She quit.”

Louis

“Jeez, was your breakup that bad?”

Bianca elbows him. Teddy forces a smile.

Teddy

“Well, we still have Jean to represent the sophomores for now - when we come back after the new year we can see about replacing her…”

Teddy trails off, and it’s quiet for a few moments too long.

Bianca

“Teddy?”

Teddy

“You know what? We don’t really have to meet today.”

Bianca

“Shouldn’t we talk about the Freshman-Sophomore Winter Social? We need to start thinking about prom prep too-”

Louis

“Oh my god, prom isn’t until fucking Spring. Teddy wants to let us loose for break -- why are you trying to trap us here?”

Bianca

"Louis, why are you even on the Student Council?”

Teddy

“I’m going to go ahead. Whoever wants to stay can. Bianca, you’re in charge.”

Bianca

“But-- Teddy--”

Louis

“Winter break, here I come. Have fun, B.”

Louis steps out in the hallway, whipping out his phone to compose a text message.

Before he presses send, he hears Teddy on the phone.

Teddy

“Vincent, you have a few hours in-between shifts tonight, don’t you? ...Really? Great, I can’t wait to see you.”

Later that day, after about a hundred texts from Andre coaxing him out of his room, Louis finally comes downstairs to hang out with the guys in front of the TV - sitting as far away from John as possible.

Andre immediately feels that something’s up.

He asks if they’re fighting. They don’t really respond. He turns to John.

Andre

“Come on man, you gonna be grumpy like this when Louis is taking us up to his dad’s chalet for Christmas break?”

John

"I don’t know if I’m even invited."

Andre

"Louis, John’s coming, right?"

Louis

"John can do whatever he wants."

Andre

"Alright, that’s it, you’re definitely coming now. Obviously we all need some more Quality Guy Time because I am feeling zero step-brotherly love here. Louis, who else is coming? Girls?"

Louis

"Kamri, Bianca and Charli said they’d come..."

John

"What, you didn’t invite your close buddy Vincent?"

Louis

"Great idea, John, why don’t I?"

John

"Go ahead!"

Vincent replies as he walks through the park by the mall with Teddy.

Vincent

"Hey, uh, dude--"

Teddy

"Vincent?"

Vincent

"What do you think of like… travelling over break?"

Teddy

"I certainly wouldn’t mind getting away from here...Where did you want to go? Someplace warm?"

Vincent

"Actually, um… what about skiing, or whatever?"

Teddy

"You know how to ski?"

Vincent

"Well, no, but… um, Louis invited me-- Louis invited us up to his dad’s place in Canada."

When Vincent mentions Louis, Teddy stops walking and stands surprised.

Teddy

"Vincent, um..."
"are you and Louis……"

"……...friends now?"

Teddy

"I didn’t even know you talked to him. In fact, I always thought you disliked each other."

Vincent

"I do -- I did --but I dunno, he’s okay."

Teddy

"Well, I don’t mind, he’s my friend too. He helped me plan your birthday, remember? He’s a little wild, but he’s not a bad guy..."

Vincent

"Yeah…"

Teddy

"If that’s what you want to do for the holidays, that’s fine with me. You know my parents don’t care what we do -- it’s not like we celebrate Christmas, anyway."

Vincent

"You really want to? But uh… I think some of the other guys might be there, like um…"

Vincent

"Well… yeah…"

Teddy finishes his coffee, tossing the cup in the trash.

Teddy

"...Even if he is there, I think it’ll be okay. I heard the girls talking about it at school - it seems like it’ll be a big group."

Vincent

"Are you sure?"

Teddy

"I’m sure."

Vincent

"Cool. Uh, I’ll let him know we’re coming, then."

Teddy

"Do you have clothes for winter sports?? Like snow pants?"

Vincent

"Um, shit, you need special clothes?"

Teddy giggles.

Teddy

"C’mon, I’ll take you shopping. If we go on this trip we’ll probably be out on the slopes with everyone Thursday night - let’s have Dude Night tonight! It’s on me!"

Vincent

"No, dude, I can’t let you--"

Teddy

"Vincent, come on - I’m sure we can find some way for you to pay me back."

For the next hour or so, Vincent and Teddy run around a few sporting goods stores, looking for snow gear.

Teddy

"Well, should we try out your new stuff?"

Vincent

I only have like 45 minutes ‘til my next shift…I don’t want to be late when I have to ask for the next few days off on short notice."

Teddy

"What if your boss says no?"

Vincent

"Eh, I can always quit."

Teddy

"Vincent!"

Vincent

"It won’t be like when we took off for the summer. I actually have some money saved up, since I took my mom off my bank account."

Teddy

"Right, you’re 18 now… How'd she take it...?"

Vincent

"You know my mom… I’m actually kind of like, worried about her… she was using like a lot of money this past year. I don’t know if it was right to like, cut her off um… cold turkey, I guess…"

Teddy

"Oh…"

They sit in silence for a second. Vincent gets up, grabbing a handful of snow.

Vincent

"So, you think you can take me?"

Teddy

"Don’t you dare."

Vincent

"Come on, arm yourself."

Teddy

"Oh goodness…"

Teddy starts making a tiny snowball.

Teddy

"Vincent, wait a second…"

After hitting Vincent in the face, Teddy runs for it, hiding behind a tree. Vincent chases him around cartoonishly for a minute or two until he decides to tackle his friend, and they roll to the ground face-to-face.

Teddy

"You know, we could just go on a ski trip on our own… just the two of us…"

Vincent pauses for a moment, but gently rolls Teddy off of him. He smiles, but tells Teddy they should stick to the plan they already have. He stands up, dusting the snow off.

Vincent

"Listen, I should um… I should be getting to work."

Teddy

"Oh, yeah…"

Vincent

"Thanks for tonight, dude."

Teddy

"No problem…"
